The beautiful, tomboyish Melanie Chisholm is also one of these celebrities that is no stranger to tattoo art. Formerly "Sporty Spice" of the teen pop group Spice Girls, Melanie C has grown over the last decade into a connoisseur of tattoos, many of which were applied during turning points in her musical career.
Melanie C has about 10 tattoos - primarily, ones that stem from Eastern (Japanese, Tibetan and Chinese) origins, although she does have some Celtic body art and elegant English script as well.

Symbolic tattoos
Melanie C's largest tattoos are the lotus, the dragon, and the phoenix.
Melanie C's lotus tattoo is on her lower back. The lotus is a symbol of purity, beauty and spiritual awakening. On top of the lotus flower is a Tibetan symbol that means "grounded".
On her back, Melanie C has a tribal phoenix tattoo, which symbolizes purity, rebirth, and the feminine "yin". The phoenix rises from its own ashes between Melanie's shoulder blades, wreathed in colorful flames.
The phoenix tattoo symbolizes an new beginning for Melanie, with her solo cd Northern Star.
This Chinese dragon tattoo, symbol for the male powers (the opposing factor to her phoenix tattoo), curls its way around the calf of Mel C's right leg. Melanie had this tattoo applied to stabilize and bring some balance into her life.
Celtic and Script Tattoos
Before Melanie C left the Spice Girls, she had a strong inclination toward Celtic tattoos.
Her first tattoo was a band of Celtic knots wrapped around her right biceps -- a look she helped to popularize across England and the world. The Celtic armband symbolizes allegiance to the tribe (the Spice Girls).
On the same arm she has two Japanese symbols. The first one means "woman", the second one "power", it's the Spice Girls' motto: "Girl power!".
On her left arm, Melanie C has a very prominent Celtic cross. Often a symbol of divinity and divine protection, it is a very common tattoo. Melanie C's reason for having this cross tattoo done is protection.
On her tummy, at the line of her belt, Melanie C has the word "Angel" written in a very thin and elegant script.
According to Melanie C's biography, this tattoo was inked in honor of relatives taken by cancer. Both her grandfather and stepgran died from cancer and she feels that they are her guardian angels looking after her. The angel tattoo symbolizes the fact that she still thinks about them.
Mel C had this little star tattoo on her right hand done when her solo album "Northern Star" went platinum for the second time.
Melanie C has 2 Tibetan writing tattoos on her wrists. The one on her left wrist reads "Love", the one on her right "Happiness".
Other Tattoos
In an interview in Loaded Magazine Melanie C says she has a Liver Bird tattoo on her bum. The Liver Bird is a part of the badge of LFC (Liverpool Football Club).
Melanie C is apparently regretting her tattoos. In an interview with The Sun she says:
Don't you think they're such a ridiculous thing to do to yourself? Now I see it's odd to mark yourself forever.
They look nice when you're toned and tanned and fabulous, but when I put on weight they looked awful. I haven't had one for seven years now.
She's going to have to say goodbye to a lot of money and time if she's considering tattoo removal!
The Spice Girls want to celebrate their reunion tour (2007) with a similar tattoo for the 5 of them, as a sign of what they mean for each other.
The idea comes from Victoria Beckham, who has several tattoos herself. She asked the famous tattoo artist Louis Molloy to sketch some designs. One of them is a circle formed by their 5 names. Mel C isn't convinced though (see previous point).
