The Japanese language is written in a mix of 3 scripts: Kanji, Katakana and Hiragana. We use 2 scripts:

• Katakana: for name translations because it is the script that's used to transliterate words of other languages.
• Kanji: used for phrases (if all words have a Kanji equivalent).

For your name translation we use transliteration (phonetic translation) because many Western names don't have a Japanese equivalent, so the translation you get is pronounced the same as in English.
